Fluoride Toothpaste – Is it safe for Babies, Toddlers and Older Children?

Being a parent is not an easy, you have always to think before using anything for your child, will it be safe for your child? And the such type question also comes in your mind when it comes to using fluoride toothpaste. The American Dental Association allows its use for children is safe . However, children may be more liable to hurdle from using fluoride more than adults. This is because their teeth are still developing and using too much fluoride can cause damage. Therefore, it is important that any type of fluoridated product such as fluoride toothpaste is absolutely safe when used for children.   

 What is Fluoride?
Fluoride is a natural mineral, which is found naturally in our water, soil and air. It is used in toothpaste and water supply because of its many benefits, they are listed below:
  • Prevents tooth decay and cavities.
  • Strengthens the enamel of weak teeth and thereby reduces the risk of mineral loss.
  • Helps in repairing teeth damaged by acid.
  • Reduces oral bacteria (plaque).
Fluoridated toothpaste has a higher fluoride content than fluoridated water and, therefore, should not be consume. Like any other vitamin or mineral supplement, when used in high quantities, it does more harm than good.
Is it safe for children to use fluoride toothpaste?

There have been many argument about whether fluoride is safe for children or not. Yes it is safe. However, it is recommended that you use a fluoride toothpaste that has been approved by a medical authority.
So, what measures should be taken for children using fluoridated toothpaste? For a small child, its amount should only be as much as a grain of rice.
It is not a good idea to use excessive fluoride before the age of 8 years. Especially when a child's teeth are developing and excessive amounts of fluoride can lead to a condition called enamel fluorosis. In this condition, the teeth start appearing colorless and patchy. These symptoms are often not noticed and usually, the condition is very mild. If you notice these symptoms, take your child to the dentist.
Most fluoride toothpastes, mouthwashes, rinses or any other fluoride-based dental care product are accidentally ingested due to excess fluoride in the body. When fluoride supplements are consumed in excess even after the body does not need fluoride, the child may have problems.
Poisoning can also occur if fluoride is consumed in excess. It is not a serious or life-threatening condition but it is very common. This usually happens half an hour after swallowing such fluoride. This condition can last for about 24 hours. Symptoms of fluoride poisoning include:

Getting nausea
Diarrhea
Vomit
stomach ache
profuse salivation
increased thirst
Can children 3 years of age and older use fluoride toothpaste?
Yes, children 3 years of age and above can use fluoride toothpaste. Note that use it only in very small amounts. It is common for children to eat up  toothpaste, which should be stopped. Be around your children when they are brushing by themselves. Explain to them that they do not swallow or eat up toothpaste, but spit it out. 
Alternative to fluoride toothpaste for kids
There are products that help with dental and oral care in addition to those that are fluoride-based. There are also other alternatives that can be used instead of fluoride toothpaste for children. which are given :

1. Neem 


Toothpaste with neem extract is beneficial for teeth. Neem is considered very effective in dental care especially as a great remedy for reducing plaque and other problems of teeth.

2. Coconut Oil


Coconut oil can be easily used as a toothpaste after mixing with baking soda. It has anti-bacterial properties that prevent bacteria from developing, which causes tooth decay. It can also help reduce plaque.

3. Olive oil
Olive oil acts as a good moisturizer and when infused with ozone works great as a dental care product. It is a great alternative to fluoride based dental care products.

4. Oregano oil


Ajwain oil can reduce toothache, pus and mouth sores. It is used only after diluting it with olive oil.

5. Baking soda


This is a very common household ingredient, you can prepare a paste by mixing baking soda and water together to make toothpaste. It can also be used as a powder for dental care.
